Gemini Corrosion Services Ltd
Excellence from Experience
Gemini was founded in 1982 when founder and Managing Director Ian Guthrie noticed the impact of corrosion on scaffolding fittings, whilst working offshore. He learned that these fittings were often scrapped when returned from the offshore rigs.
Gemini’s initial service was based in a small unit at Spurryhillock Industrial Estate, Stonehaven located some 15 miles south of Aberdeen, and soon became an established service provider for key offshore companies. These companies enjoyed the benefits of extended asset life expectancy with the fast responsive turn round provided by a local supplier.
In 1985 Gemini recognised that further opportunities existed within the existing offshore client base and increased the range of services offered, investing in surface preparation equipment and establishing the Corrosion Services business. The benefits to their client based bought further success and the enhanced business volumes meant that further expansion was required and the company moved to larger premises on the Spurryhillock estate. This became the company headquarters whilst Gemini sought to continually develop and expand facilities, constructing new coating and blast halls, whilst continually improving infrastructure. Recognising that staff are a companies most valuable asset, training and development schemes were implemented and internal promotion has ensured the retention of a qualified and experienced team.
This focus on continual improvement lead to significant growth and the further expansion of its services to include other protective coating processes, couples with the development and implementation of management systems to industry standards. Gemini became the first coating company in the UK to attain accreditation of Quality, H&S and Environment Management Systems. These factors coupled with the proven service and quality enabled Gemini to be recognised by the key players of the global oil & gas industry.
In 1998 Gemini expanded yet again to satisfy the tubular requirements of the offshore industry and 1999 designed and commissioned the construction of a purpose built Tubular and Corrosion facility at Montrose, including a unique automated TSA facility.
Consolidation and future plans…
Over the past decade the business has continued to grow and expand and ongoing strategic review of business and operations saw Gemini open new offices the Montrose site in 2009. Despite difficult trading conditions across the whole of the offshore industry, Gemini have strengthened their team, commissioning the Stonehaven site for new coating operations, and emerging stronger than before and ready for the future.
Gemini are now in a position to take the next step, and having recently secured the largest contract in its history, are actively investigating new coating processes and applications
